Broken

Trevor was riding his bike in our cul-de-sac Saturday afternoon with some neighbor boys, when they dared him to "jump" his bike off our driveway. (Our driveway has a culvert and fairly shallow ditch next to it and the boys were riding their bikes off it into the ditch....and various other stunts, I'm sure). Trevor accepted their dare, but wasn't quite successful. His bike twisted on him (his story) as he made the "jump" and he landed in the ditch on his elbow. He said he heard a pop, got up and tried to straighten his arm and heard another pop. (His story, again) The friends came to our door and got my mother-in-law, Diane, who was up for the weekend. Nathan and I were in the back discussing plans for a date night that night. :o) I came out front and heard Trevor crying and retelling the events. It was apparent at first glance at his elbow that something wasn't right. It was already swollen and didn't seem to be able to straighten. My first thought was he'd dislocated it. He showed it to Nathan and we agreed he needed to go to Urgent Care. So, thankfully, Diane was able to stay with Cody and both of us took him in to be seen. They were close to closing, but again, thankfully, agreed to see Trevor. They took xrays and said without a radiologist looking at the xrays, they couldn't say for sure, but the Dr. was fairly certain it was a break. He explained that our elbows have fat pads that will expand when there is a trauma such as a break and he said Trevor had both interior and exterior expanded fat pads. He also said, because of Trevor's age, the growth plates are all open and also makes it hard to determine the location of the break. (We rec'd a call from them yesterday and the radiologist confirmed it was a break, but concurred with the other criteria, hard to determine exactly where.) Trevor was given a splint and sling for the weekend. We will go Tuesday afternoon to see an Orthopedic Surgeon for further treatment. (We were again thankful that we were able to secure a Dr Nathan saw with his knee surgery earlier this year. He is great!) We are anticipating a hard cast at that point....hopefully nothing else! :o) God had carried us through this weekend with all kind of blessings: Trevor fell in the dirt and not on the concrete--which would have been so much worse, he's not in sports right now to miss out and the injury will be healed by basketball season, we were seen by great drs even though it was closing time. I could go on, but God is in the details and He deserves all our thanks!!) All in all, no broken bones for 10 years.....not bad for having 2 boys!! :o)
