Labor Day Adventure

We've had a mental list of things we'd like to do around the area for quite some time. We thought Labor Day might be a good day to do just that. We decided on visiting the George Washington Carver monument and park over in Diamond--just 20 minutes away. Trevor's Kindergarten class went there for a field trip this spring. We have lived here for 15 years now and haven't visited this site. It was really interesting. GWC was born into slavery and became a renowned scientist and scholar, sharing his knowledge worldwide. Nathan and I were very impressed at the journey GWC's life took, and that he gave all credit to the Lord. We toured the visitor's center--learning facts and timelines,etc. We participated in an experiment--making milk out of crushed peanuts. (Something GWC did for residents in Africa) Trevor was so thrilled to be assitant and helper on this experiement. There was a hands-on area for kids to see and touch and heard animals that can be found in the woods and see different plants and bugs that GWC might have studied. After exploring the visitor's center, we ate a picnic lunch and then took a hike on a trail around the park. It was nice weather--really warm in the sun, but not too bad otherwise. Leaves were falling as we walked! Fall is coming! Trevor led the way most of the time--being familiar with the grounds, of course. :-) It was such a nice day and a nice time together. The boys loved this exhibit...you pushed a button to hear different animal sounds and they had stuffed displays inside to view as you heard the sound they make. The favorite was the bobcat and the flying squirrel.
